Waar gaat het over?

This is a history of the best-known varieties of football: soccer; rugby union; rugby league; American and Canadian football; Gaelic football; and Australian Rules. It describes the football-like games of the distant past, and the evolution of the modem, mass-audience sports that people know and love today. It looks at how the rules, tactics, playing styles and cultures of these sports have developed, how they have become popular in various parts of the world and different sections of society, and the historical links between them. It is in a lively, informal style, although it also factorientated. This is a hugely interesting story, not only from a sporting point of view, but also in the way the games reflect changes in society, and issues of national and class identity. There is also a guide to resources, such as websites and books, which could be of interest to readers who would like to find out more about each sport. Note: The title comes from a pamphlet issued by Philip Stubbes, a 16th-century Puritan who counted football among the 'develyshe pastimes' that he believed were leading the English people to sin (this is one of the themes covered in Chapter 1).
